I just wanted to send a BIG THANK YOU for all of you who showed up to the 1st ANNUAL FUEL FITNESS HILL RUN for World Wildlife Fund (WWF). We raised some $ for a great cause, had some fun and as far as I know no-one passed out! Personally speaking it was close though!

Getting ready for Golf Season

Spring is here and for many of you that means Golf Sesaon!. With the Masters just around the corner many of you will be hitting the links so I decided to team up with my friend Mike Wiebe to shoot this video. Mike is a 7- time Remax World Long Drive Finalist and uses the Equalizer and Buddy System in all his training sessions.

In this video Mike is shows us some simple moves to develop balance and a stronger core. They look simple but done with focus, control and full range of motion they can be very demanding.

So here are the golf specific exercises we show in this video that you can incorporate into your training:

1. Lunge with a rotational twist. Hold the Buddy System straight out in front of you with both hands and from the lunge position twist your upper body in the direction of the foot that is forward.

2. Woodchops. In a wide foot stance hold the Buddy System down by your foot closest to your partner. Slowly move up and across your chest and extend the arms diagonally up in the opposite direction. Perform 5 to 10X on that side then switch to the other side. *Note* Be sure to lift the heel in order to allow your leg to rotate inward as you reach up do this one in a mirror to make sure you achieve long straight lines.

3. Single Leg Reach. While holding the Buddy System hover your right foot just off the ground and while keeping your back flat. Slowly lower yourself forward with a knee bend and reach down and forward with light tension on the Buddy System. Come back to standing slowly. While still balancing on the same leg perform a one arm row. 510X on each side.

**Note** The Buddy is providing a smooth and controlled tension for each exercise with a lighter tension on muscle contractions and slightly more in the eccentric phase.

Whether you are getting ready for the links or not, this type of training will not only help your athletic endevours but will be helpful with maintaing back health and moving through your daily activites with ease. Ad in some Equalizer and Buddy System strength training and cardio and you have a complete and well rounded fitness program!

The Buddy System works so well with group exercise because everyone is working at their level (tension is adjusted by the user instantly simply by how hard you are pulling/pushing) but engaged with a partner so the pressure is on to perform. Each exercise here is tough and very effective and we can go right into the next exercise quickly. Because we are standing we are always working the legs and core buring more calories, increasing effort level and making it more sport specific. If you think this looks good wait till you try it!!

I recently shot this 10-minute video with my friend Donovan doing a number of different exercises with the Buddy System. The neat thing about this video is that Donovan had not used the product before but quickly picked it up and found out what a great workout it is. Here is what he had to say after his first introduction:

A few months ago, we went to Ryan Lees Boot Camp to pre-launch

the Buddy System and received an amazing response!

When I came up with this idea, I wanted to:

1. create a constant tension on the working muscles (concentrically and eccentrically); 2. work many muscles at once; 3. work the core; 4. provide stability training; 5. extend sets with variable and instant tensions changes 6. and add a little bit of friendly competition

- all at the same time!

In the video you will see 2 x 5 minute segments and I have to say that it was tough - not so tough that I could not finish, but I was in front of the camera and I had to talk. In many of our product testing sessions, we trained on the Buddy System in 5-minute segments FULL OUT, and we were exhausted and dropped to the floor. After one such session, another trainer looked down at me and said "You okay Buddy??" Too funny!

We have created many flowing and functional training routines and played around with many more, but what I am really looking forward to is learning from you. Just like the Equalizer and all the great new training ideas I have seen from other creative trainers, I know the same will happen with the Buddy System. I have already seen it happen in one of our focus groups with some Boot Camp instructors- WOW- what great ideas they came up with!

I know this is going to be an effective tool not only for Boot Camps, but also for dryland and off-season conditioning camps and school programs. It is a simple and portable way to get athletes and kids doing resistance training. The Buddy System also works well as a harness for all sorts of running drills.

The Buddy System is made of ballistic nylon strapping with UV protection, and durable handles with heavy duty stitching.

The nylon strap is wide enough so that it does feel uncomfortable around the waist, and unlike elastic and rubber bands, it will never snap!!

The most unique feature of the Buddy System is the ability to do BI-LATERAL training. The middle strap moves smoothly through a centre ring (with handle), allowing for one arm to provide resistance for the other. Tension can be dialed up or down instantly making for a quick and extremely effective workout!

Drinking more water... I'm so excited...

If you ask people what their goals are you will most likely
get a list of things they should be doing. "Eat more fruits
and vegetables, drink more water and exercise 5X per week".

This is the process. It is not a goal.

These are behaviours that, when implemented, will lead us
to our goals.

Greater health, energy and prosperity begin with
IMAGINATION - wild images of what you will look like,
feel like and achieve. Not with the mundane task of
drinking more water! How exciting...

Willpower itself will not keep you eating right. It will
not last in the gym. It wanes without a steady diet of
imagination - pictures of what gets you excited (a new
car,a killer body or a new PB). Have this and the process
will take care of itself.

The same people always show up…

 Yesterday I had the pleasure of teaching a fitness seminar. With the right exercises and intensity you can absolutely get a great workout in very little time- you know that and I know that but the general public does not. They think you need hours in the gym and they think treadmills work. It does not surprise me anymore that one minute of jumping jacks and deep squats will really open their eyes.

I will go as far to say that I believe that bending at the knee and hip could cure the obesity epidemic!

What else did I notice? The same people attend every seminar on fitness and nutrition year after year. The content makes sense to them. They might even do it for a while but one lady in this seminar summed it up perfectly. She said, “Even though the actual time needed is minimal- most people will come up with 10 excuses NOT to do it”.

Here are two simple questions that will forever change your thinking and get your knees bending:

  1. What will happen if I DON’T exercise;  and
  2. What will happen if I DO?

It is important to take 5 minutes with each of these questions. It’s amazing what you and your clients will come up with!

The Art of Multi-tasking

I was driving behind a guy yesterday who was barely approaching the speed limit while thumbing away on his handheld - most likely a text message with lives in the balance!

Not too long ago everyone was using the catch phrase "Multi-tasking". I think many people see it as a badge of honour- look how many things I can do at once. Well, in my opinion, you are most likely getting lots of things done poorly. I have an idea- why don't you focus on driving while you are driving!

I am convinced that one of the reasons people are not getting the results they want with their fitness (and in other areas) is because they are not focused on the task at hand. How many times have you seen that person reading while on the eliptical? Great, they are going to become better readers.

Ask people why they are reading or watching TV while working out and they will say to distract themselves from the workout or to make the time go by faster. This is the last thing you want to do. Working requires you to be consciously present, to immerse yourself in the movements, feel your muscles work and revel in the moment. It is a form of meditation.

This singular focus gets you much better results (physical and mental). The key is to decide if
where you are right now and what you are doing is important. If it is, give it your full attention.
You will perform the task better and be more efficient.

"Single-tasking"...That is the way to go!

Ryan Lee and Jim Labadie changed my life.

Hi everyone,

Last month I attended Ryan Lee’s Bootcamp to do a pre-launch of our new product and it was a great show! 

 

I had the opportunity to listen to some presentations that changed my life. I really understand now the power of blogs to reach and inspire a large audience (I read Jim Labadie’s every day) and how to just be yourself. One of the speakers, Scott Tousignant said it best for me: 50% of the people reading your blog might hate you but 50% will love you and become fans. That is better than 100% thinking you and your blog are just okay.

 

After putting my son to bed Sunday night I biked to the park to do my chin-up and dip ritual on the playground equipment - 10 sets of 10. While I was alone in the park (in the dark and my name is Marc- weird) it struck home that this is a great blog entry. Why? Because 50% of the people reading this might think I am crazy to go out on a Sunday night to do that but 50% of you GET IT!

 

What separates fit people from those who are not? A workout like that one.

So I can’t be everything to everyone. Oh well. I have a lot to share from years in the trenches for anyone who wants to listen… hope you enjoy my weekly posts!

Michael Phelps and the mind...

Michael Phelps (Winner of 16 Olympic medals) was recently quoted as saying; 

"I think that everything is possible as long as you put your mind to it and you put the work and time into it. I think your mind really controls everything."

 

That sounds great but what does it mean? Most of us would agree that the mind controls everything and continue to get less than stellar results. I am completely convinced that a person’s fitness level is primarily determined by how they see themselves in their own mind.
